Riding the Light Wave

December 14, 2018. Sunset 4:50 PM.
Albany, CA.

Walking along the BART tracks in Albany, CA with my friend Rae as we celebrate the last day of the earliest sunsets of the year. All along this latitude, we are already expanding the light at the end of the day. Sadly, the sun will continue to rise later and later, (even after the Solstice) holding back the full expansion of the day. It will be well into the 1st and 2nd weeks of January before the sunrise begins to shine an earlier light on day. Then off we go!

Ghost Ship Vigil

November 30, 2018. Sunrise 7:04 AM.
Oakland, CA.

I joined Suki O’Kane at sunrise a few days before the 2nd anniversary of the horrible fire that killed 36 people in the Ghost Ship Warehouse on Dec 2, 2016. Photos of many of the victims, ornaments and votive candle holders dangle above the abundance of fresh flowers surrounding the base of the “tree”. Rain the night before had filled each of the small glass candle holders with tiny shots of water, which Suki gently emptied one by one into the waiting bouquets below. She has lovingly tended this memorial and witnessed each sunrise there during the month of November in anticipation of 2-year anniversary.

Stay with Standard time

NO on Proposition 7.
Just weighing in as someone who hates the disruption to the gentle ebb and flow of the continuous cycle of longer and shorter amounts of sunlight. Changing the clocks twice a year also prevents us from collectively experiencing a constant connection to this large planetary cycle - and by extension-- to one another.

So why NO? This proposition is for us to remain on Daylight Savings Time NOT Standard time. This means we will be out of sync with most of the world much of the time (many places do NOT change the clocks to Daylight Savings Time to begin with).
It also means that in another month, the sun will be rising at this latitude at 8:30 in the morning.
I believe a better option would be to remain on Standard Time all year (as does Arizona and Hawaii). All we would have to do would be to opt out of the change to Daylight Savings Time. The law is already set up for that.
I propose voting NO on 7 this time around and putting a Proposition on the next ballot to make Pacific Standard Time the permanent option for us.

Fresh and Foggy

September 10, 2018. Sunrise 6:47 AM.

Not smoky! Just the plain old wet fog this morning. Thank you to Elisabeth Beaird for the lovely little bells I rang for yet another sunrise with no visible sun.
On my way into the (19th Annual) San Francisco Electronic Music Festival last night, Elisabeth handed me the paper bag along with my ticket. A sweet gift to start off a wonderful evening of music. Thank you SFEMF!!

duh! South Africa-- south of the equator

Even after so many posts from Joe in the past few days, it only just dawned on me because of the relatively early sunset times and late sunrises, that he is SOUTH OF THE EQUATOR!!! (2917 km = 1812 miles).

Winter.
And only 800 miles closer than Warren's Winter Solstice 6/21 post from Australia (4209 km = 2616 miles)
Happy Wintering down there!!

The second longest day

June 22, 2018. Sunset 8:33 PM
Pescadero, CA.

The second longest day of sunlight, Liz and I ring it down along the coast. A rare and wonderful day. We had just sat through 1½ cycles of “Forest (for a thousand years)", a surround sound installation in the woods at UC Santa by Janet Cardiff and Bures. The sounds were so beautifully recorded and convincingly presented, we were transported.

Summer Solstice- over the top!!

June 21, 2018. Sunset 8:34 PM
Garden of Memory at the Chapel of the Chimes. Oakland, CA

The most exuberant dailybell Solstice sunset ringing at the annual Garden of Memory event- ever!

Now to work on the ending…

Many thanks everyone who contributed to this glorious moment: to the Cardew Choir for their incredible 4-hour performance of Pauline Oliveros’ inspirational Heart Chant. Their long tones have been echoed and magnified by an inspired audience throughout the space, adding a magnificent chorus to the bells. To the enthusiastic members of the public who brought, bells, keys and their voices. Special thanks to the dailybell team (Jenny Holland, Vangie King, Julie Moon, Adria Otte, Alan Phillips, Wendy Reid, Norman Tuck) for distributing cards and bells and information prior to the performance. Wonderful video footage from Miriam Jacobs. And finally, to Sarah Cahill who started the Garden of Memory so many years ago and the New Music Bay Area team for pulling off this entire magnificent event every summer Solstice.

Winter Solstice Sunrise in June--

Hi Brenda!
While we were celebrating the longest day, my friend Warren Burt sent this as a reminder of what is to come...

Winter Solstice sunrise. Taken from V/Line commuter bus in Trentham, Victoria, Australia at about 7:55 am on Thursday morning 21 June, 2018. Frost on the meadows - minus 2 C (28.4 F), clear morning - first non-rainy day in about 2 weeks.

Cheers,

Warren

22 years of Sunsets ...

May 13, 2018. Sunset 8:10 PM

Remembering my mom on Mother's day -- It's been 22 years worth of sunsets since my mother passed away-- I dug around many boxes of photos to find one with all of us in it. Here's my young mother- with me (spaced out in the back), my sister and brother in 1965. I miss my mother and brother and am so grateful for my dear sister.
