2008 was the inaugural year in an ongoing, aspirational project dedicated to the observation of the sun every time it crosses the horizon and to sharing the awareness of that moment with others while ringing bells. It is based on the conviction that something as inarguable as the movement of the earth can be used as a point of unity and awareness among large groups of people who might otherwise find it impossible to agree. Ghost Ship Vigil

I joined Suki O’Kane at sunrise a few days before the 2nd anniversary of the horrible fire that killed 36 people in the Ghost Ship Warehouse on Dec 2, 2016. Photos of many of the victims, ornaments and votive candle holders dangle above the abundance of fresh flowers surrounding the base of the “tree”. Rain the night before had filled each of the small glass candle holders with tiny shots of water, which Suki gently emptied one by one into the waiting bouquets below. She has lovingly tended this memorial and witnessed each sunrise there during the month of November in anticipation of 2-year anniversary.
