2008 was the inaugural year in an ongoing, aspirational project dedicated to the observation of the sun every time it crosses the horizon and to sharing the awareness of that moment with others while ringing bells. It is based on the conviction that something as inarguable as the movement of the earth can be used as a point of unity and awareness among large groups of people who might otherwise find it impossible to agree. Bottoming Out!

Sunset 4:51 PM. San Francisco

Tonight is the earliest that the sun will set this year (for this latitude, at least). It will continue to set at 4:51 PM for the next 12 days before it once again opens up the day and begins to set later. All of this before the Winter Solstice. How can this be, you may ask. Ah, well :) The daylight continues to shrink because the sun is still rising later each day- eventually culminating on the shortest day a few weeks from now.
