2008 was the inaugural year in an ongoing, aspirational project dedicated to the observation of the sun every time it crosses the horizon and to sharing the awareness of that moment with others while ringing bells. It is based on the conviction that something as inarguable as the movement of the earth can be used as a point of unity and awareness among large groups of people who might otherwise find it impossible to agree. OK. So what's with the red hair?

First of all- vanity. I didn’t like that my hair looked so grey. Second- Lucille Ball.

The last time I kept company with a large bell, I had also dyed my hair red. That was an accident that I came to appreciate. This time, I did it on purpose.

It is my hope that other people will also associate red hair with funny women and with playfulness. And while they are still in that frame of mind, I will already be offering them some bells to ring.
