2008 was the inaugural year in an ongoing, aspirational project dedicated to the observation of the sun every time it crosses the horizon and to sharing the awareness of that moment with others while ringing bells. It is based on the conviction that something as inarguable as the movement of the earth can be used as a point of unity and awareness among large groups of people who might otherwise find it impossible to agree. Heartbreak for 100 years

August 21, 2020.

The smoke has been shifting all day- Big Basin is an old growth Redwood forest nearby and it has burned all the way from the town of Boulder out to the ocean. There was a major fire there 100 years ago and it came back- It was the first Redwood forest I had ever seen and one of my favorite places to visit since I first arrived in the Bay Area over 40 years ago.
Hopefully it will regenerate, though sadly not in our lifetime — a gift and refuge for future generations.
