2008 was the inaugural year in an ongoing, aspirational project dedicated to the observation of the sun every time it crosses the horizon and to sharing the awareness of that moment with others while ringing bells. It is based on the conviction that something as inarguable as the movement of the earth can be used as a point of unity and awareness among large groups of people who might otherwise find it impossible to agree. The light IS coming!

Sunset 4:52 PM. San Francisco, CA

Almost at the low point. We are approaching the lower end of the curve for the earliest sunset of the year.

At this latitude, the sunset has lingered at the same time for several days in a row. And at 4:52PM, it’s one minute away from the earliest sunset, which will occur on December 1st.

The sun will then continue to set at 4:51 until mid December, when it will tip forward and continue to creep later into the evening. However, the days continue to grow even shorter until the Solstice because the sun continues to rise later and later each day.

The light is coming!
