February 24, Tibetan New Year, Seattle Sunrise
February 24, 2020. Seattle, WA
Turning of a cycle.
The year is now here.
My spiritual friend, Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo, writes:
"As we enter this Year of the Metal Mouse, we can resolve to take life one day at a time and practice gratitude for the many wonderful things that life continuously offers us. We can also appreciate the immense goodness that exists in this world (though is seldom publicised). A day is well-lived if we can use it to bring some happiness and comfort to those around us and if we carry out our work in the world with awareness and kindness rather than with confusion and gloom. The Dharma points the way, but we ourselves must walk the path."
Listen.
There is goodness.
Light.
Listen to the bell sounding.
Goodness.

9 words for February 9
Feb 9, 2020. Sunrise 7:05 AM. Berkeley, CA. About three minutes before sunrise, I walked out on the second-floor balcony, and the first thing I saw was the full moon in the west. Irresistible to photograph! The wind was very strong, so I decided to use slo-mo video as the sun rose. I forgot that the audio would be slowed down, too, so the ceramic bell I was ringing sounds like a drum! 9 words for February 9: setting dancing flying crows sirens cat's chow time sleep -- Nancy Beckman

How Time Flies...
Feb 3, 2020. Sunset 6:18 PM.
In the Sky over Atalanta? Cincinnati?
Jangling my keys softly at 40,000 ft, as the sun sets on a flight full of passengers somewhere between Atlanta, GA and Cincinnati, OH. Breathtaking!
Apparently altitude does change the time of the sunset. The time stamp on this image is 18:18:45 PM EST, and the sunset times recorded for Atlanta & Cincinnati on February 3 are listed as 6:10 & 6:01 PM EST respectively.

January 26, 2020. Sunset 5:24 PM. Berkeley, CA. ....from my window - Wendy Reid and Ariel This is an amazing video- Real time sunset from Wendy and her daughter Ariel. Starting with the glowing sky just as the sun it about to set through the log drain of color from the world to darkness. Accompanied by bell ringing until the final moments. Gratitude and Fun
January 16, 2020. Sunset 5:40 PM. Cincinnati, OH. I brought bells to share with folks at The Hive happy hour Cincinnati. The Hive is an intentional community and offers workshops in mindfulness, creativity, body work. This is a new community for me but I invited them to mark the sunset with me, and everyone was so into it! It brought me so much joy and a feeling of belonging. (if Sonya gives permission) Afterwards Sonya Verma who I had just met, shared with me and later the group, her daily practice around the sunset and sunrise. Sharing and marking the sunset as a group, brought us together in a deeper way. There was a lot of willingness, gratitude and fun. --Sherri Wood

Here we are
January 11, 2020. Sunrise 7:24 AM. Oakland, CA. An infusion— The perfect fade in. Coming up from underneath and greeting each cell individually. Hello. Peace be with you. An invitation to come alive. Here we are. -- Eric Kupers to Dailybell Sunwatch

Full Moon Sunrise
January 10, 2020. Sunrise. El Cerrito, CA. My first full moon sunrise recording. It has a tiny bit of post production (I doubled and staggered the track to create a continuous vocal drone). This recording was made in a eucalyptus grove on top of a hill in El Cerrito, CA on 1/10/20 at 7:24-7:26 am PST. I'm unsure how else to share this at the moment, so if you have any bright ideas, feel free to download it, and do what you will with it :) —Rae Diamond

I thought it would be random words
January 10, 2020. Berkeley, CA.
I rang in the 7:24 am sunrise today. I took out my favorite temple bell from Japan and set it up in the garden. Here’s what I did:
1. Beginning at 7:22, I struck the large bell 10 times and rang a small bell. I took a video for part of it. (Sorry the beginning is a little shaky) I didn’t do 2 minutes of video because I thought it would be too large to send to you.
2. Then did a 1 minute recording on voice memos app.
3. I wrote down 10 words that came to me. (Beforehand, I thought it would be random words - maybe next time!).
Redwood tree
Misty breath
Saturated ground
Crumpled leaves
Clear sky
4. Took some photos in the garden

I’ll send the recording & photos from my phone. The 10 is for the date. Next month it’ll be 8. I like keeping track of the full moon day -uposatha practice in Buddhism.
I was kind of busy - haha! Maybe next time will be more contemplative!

The Latest Sunrise
January 10, 2020. San Francisco, CA. Today is the last day of the latest sunrise. We have been stuck with the same sunrise time ever since the beginning of this year and have held steady ever since. The days have grown longer only because the sunset has drifted later each evening. So, Hallelujah for tomorrow because of the earlier sunrise, the day will expand from both ends! Yay we are on our way into the light. (At least as far as the length of the days go).

Time of Too Much
Depending where we reside on our little planet, the subtle changes of light along the Equator could pass by unnoticed. The increasing lopsidedness of the presence or absence of light as we move towards the poles affects us more deeply. Yet taking a long view, there is a constant shifting, a mindless balance of planetary cycles with regard to how many hours we spend in the light or dark each day. The Solstice is the day we sit with “too much”. Here in the North, we are sitting at the bottom of a well in excessive darkness. Sitting in the black hole for too long. In the South—scorched Earth under a blazing sun. Too much. This shift into “too much” doesn’t happen suddenly – it happens gradually and then stalls for a moment. Now. For the most part of this past week, we’ve been sitting in the extremes with a few seconds of change towards the light or the darkness every day. Fortunately, everything changes eventually. For better or worse, we move into the next part of the cycle. For us in the North, a fraction of light longer- illumination, hope? In the South, a fraction of darkness- cooling, refreshing the parched earth. Nature may know how to balance herself, but she can’t, not with the way we have been treating her. I can only hope that in some small way, if we can connect with the movement - this cycle of light and dark—if we can use this unfailing, elemental cycle as an opportunity to remember how we are connected to each other and to the planet, that it will remind us to take care. Maybe we can do something to help the Earth to rebalance herself, to heal from our neglect and abuse. Maybe not. In either case, the planet will endure, with or without us. I’d prefer the first option.

September 22, 2019. Sunset 6:55 PM. East River, New York. Another Ferry from Governors Island-- this one to Manhattan on 9/22/19 at the last sunset of the summer. This Ferry was designed to accommodate cars more than people, so we were mostly crunched up in the front (with the view). Thank you Gabe and Audrey for your videos :)

The Equinox Team!
September 22, 2019. Lower Manhattan, NY.
Happy Equinox!
It is done-- we have tipped gently into the darkness. Many thanks to the dailybell team for helping the visitors from Governors Island celebrate the final sunset of the summer, ringing bells across the East River on the final ferries to Manhattan and Brooklyn. Thanks to Carol Parkinson and Harvestworks for their support and to Patrick Allen, Elisabeth Beaird, Ben Buford, Emily, Elise de Jong, Caleb Garling, Audrey Greenfield, Barb Hertel, Ana Léon, Richard Marriott, Maria Mykolenko, Mia Narell, Nicole Roscher, Gabriel Shalom and Norman Tuck for showing up, talking with visitors to the Island and passing out over 300 bells.

“My neighbor Dalia caught this sunset on her Cape Cod vacation. Wow!” - Joe

I have always enjoyed the challenge of figuring out a) what time it is and b) where we are at this particular moment on an airplane!! Thanks Joe

One year ago
May 29, 1970 – August 26, 2018 August 26, 2019. Sunset 7:49 PM. San Francisco, CA. It’s hard to believe that it’s been one year since our dear friend, Erin Espeland passed away. A scientist and fellow musician, Erin left us way too soon and we miss her deeply.
