Today our next-door neighbor came home, and I invited him to join me some evening ringing down the sun.

March 22, 2020 is Amayavasa or the new moon, the dark night. According to Vedic astrology, its the day when the virus will have maximum power. Millions of people in quarantine in their homes, this is good for the planet Earth. At the moment when the moon is passing into a new "nakshatra" called Revati, people are playing bellin and making noise. The accumulation of vibrations helps the blood circulation in our bodies. This is why the ancient Shakit temples in the mountains had huge bells and gongs.
Let us invoke Mother Kali to come and eliminate this virus. All of you can join us, I am confident that we will overcome evil.

2020 March 9 Seattle sunset, full moon & prayers

Today is the Chotrul Düchen in the Tibetan Buddhist calendar. It is believed that on this day the results of our thoughts, words and actions are multiplied by 10 million.

It's an opportunity to create huge positive results and dedicating the merit to the happiness and enlightenment of all beings.

As my camera points over Lake Washington from Seattle to the horizon over Kirkland, I pray for all beings and wish them good health and happiness. This is the area with the greatest number of people who have passed away from COVID19 in the USA to date.

Full Moon Rise upon the Fairy Garden

For observing the full moon sunrise Monday, I got up at 6am , thinking that the sunrise would be 6:28. It wasn't!!! I was up an hour early, which enabled me to witness the amazing moon in the first shot -YAY! An hour later, I took the moon again, and after ringing the sunrise bell , I took the next photos - 1. 2.the white outer part of the ceanothus blossom which looks like snow on the hummingbird sage, 3. first poppy of the season in the garden, 4. ceanothus and fiery red pineapple sage blossoms. It's SPRING!

Standard Time RIP

Until we meet again in the fall-- Disrupting our sense of cycles and continuity once again. We can opt out of this change and remain in Standard Time- it's the law of the land! Arizona and Hawaii are already hanging in there. However, if we want to stay with Daylight Savings Time, it's a bit more difficult to change. Also, not the better option if you think about going to work in the dark at 8:00 in the winter. Or as a state or Nation that we would be more out of sync with the rest of world-- An hour ahead for more than half the year.

Ach-- at least remember to jump ahead tonight so as not to be late for anything tomorrow.

About three minutes before sunrise, I walked out on the second-floor balcony, and the first thing I saw was the full moon in the west. Irresistible to photograph! The wind was very strong, so I decided to use slo-mo video as the sun rose. I forgot that the audio would be slowed down, too, so the ceramic bell I was ringing sounds like a drum!

Jangling my keys softly at 40,000 ft, as the sun sets on a flight full of passengers somewhere between Atlanta, GA and Cincinnati, OH. Breathtaking!
Apparently altitude does change the time of the sunset. The time stamp on this image is 18:18:45 PM EST, and the sunset times recorded for Atlanta & Cincinnati on February 3 are listed as 6:10 & 6:01 PM EST respectively.

I brought bells to share with folks at The Hive happy hour Cincinnati. The Hive is an intentional community and offers workshops in mindfulness, creativity, body work. This is a new community for me but I invited them to mark the sunset with me, and everyone was so into it! It brought me so much joy and a feeling of belonging. (if Sonya gives permission) Afterwards Sonya Verma who I had just met, shared with me and later the group, her daily practice around the sunset and sunrise. Sharing and marking the sunset as a group, brought us together in a deeper way. There was a lot of willingness, gratitude and fun.

Full Moon Sunrise

My first full moon sunrise recording. It has a tiny bit of post production (I doubled and staggered the track to create a continuous vocal drone). This recording was made in a eucalyptus grove on top of a hill in El Cerrito, CA on 1/10/20 at 7:24-7:26 am PST. I'm unsure how else to share this at the moment, so if you have any bright ideas, feel free to download it, and do what you will with it :)

I thought it would be random words

I rang in the 7:24 am sunrise today. I took out my favorite temple bell from Japan and set it up in the garden. Here’s what I did:

1. Beginning at 7:22, I struck the large bell 10 times and rang a small bell. I took a video for part of it. (Sorry the beginning is a little shaky) I didn’t do 2 minutes of video because I thought it would be too large to send to you.

2. Then did a 1 minute recording on voice memos app.



3. I wrote down 10 words that came to me. (Beforehand, I thought it would be random words - maybe next time!).
Redwood tree
Misty breath
Saturated ground
Crumpled leaves
Clear sky

4. Took some photos in the garden


I’ll send the recording & photos from my phone. The 10 is for the date. Next month it’ll be 8. I like keeping track of the full moon day -uposatha practice in Buddhism.

I was kind of busy - haha! Maybe next time will be more contemplative!

The Latest Sunrise

Today is the last day of the latest sunrise. We have been stuck with the same sunrise time ever since the beginning of this year and have held steady ever since. The days have grown longer only because the sunset has drifted later each evening. So, Hallelujah for tomorrow because of the earlier sunrise, the day will expand from both ends! Yay we are on our way into the light. (At least as far as the length of the days go).
