And just for a moment- for a change- instead of bemoaning the early onset of evening, let's just for a wee moment consider the upsides of Standard time-- which are brighter mornings and avoiding many days of a scenario like this where the SUNRISE coincides with getting on the bus for school-
(Although if you lived in Montana and further North- you'd be doing this anyway) 😬

This is my usual plug for remaining with the same time standard all year-- but that standard being Standard Time-- In spite of it's very persuasive name -we know deep down- that Daylight Savings Time doesn't actually increase the daylight. However, it has been cited as increasing profits for business--

Homestretch Halloween

Though this is an enthusiastic neighborhood where neighbors go all out with decorations, haunting their houses and lawns with sounds and staged fun/scary tableau. Yesterday sunrise was at 7:00 and sunset at 7:01. Today the times are switched- Sunrise is at 7:01 and Sunset is at 7:00. Nearly balanced, with 6 seconds longer in the dark than the light

Rosh Hashana year 5783 begins this evening at sundown. L’Shanah Tovah! Happy New Year to everyone who celebrates the beginning of this 5783 year.

And for an even finer point of balance—like those last few ounces on the doctor’s scale--
While the Equinox brought a generic point of planetary balance regarding the amount of daylight to darkness, the Equilux (literally Equal light) is the fine tuning of that balance based on where you actually live - choose Sunrise and Sunset calendar, then enter you town

Hard to call it around here. Today we have 1:30 more light than night. Tomorrow, we will have actually crossed over into the darkness by 6 seconds. Your call. I prefer to wait until the last minute to acknowledge that inevitable creep into darker mornings and earlier sunsets.

Nine Eleven

21 years later. Like December 7, 1941, this day and date continues to resonate. The mere mention of those two words - Nine Eleven - continues to cause us to stop and remember and collectively mourn. It’s also a day we can celebrate what we value about the present- special or mundane, and we’ve captured a few of those moments as the sun sets this evening.

Of possible interest— Time Travel?

Clock time vs planetary time — And the winner is...
It’s a bit of a fluke— As the crow flies directly east/west, these places are less than 200 miles apart—about the same distance as Columbus, Ohio and Erie, PA – where the difference in sunset time is less than 10 minutes. (The northern vs southern latitude is not a very significant factor this time of year so close to the Equinox).

However, because the state of Michigan does not occupy the same time zone, each of these places are at the extreme opposite ends of their respective time zones. (Lake Michigan at the end of Eastern Time and Lake Superior at the beginning of Central Time).

So, instead of a smooth transition as the earth steadily turns, the sunset times are chopped, skewed and spit out to match our clocks which suggests we can travel into the past.

I thought this was an interesting little rabbit hole.
