"Just me" - Normanand a little piece of trash...
2008 was the inaugural year in an ongoing, aspirational project dedicated to the observation of the sun every time it crosses the horizon and to sharing the awareness of that moment with others while ringing bells. It is based on the conviction that something as inarguable as the movement of the earth can be used as a point of unity and awareness among large groups of people who might otherwise find it impossible to agree. No more teetering. Here we go.
Yesterday sunrise was at 7:00 and sunset at 7:01. Today the times are switched- Sunrise is at 7:01 and Sunset is at 7:00. Nearly balanced, with 6 seconds longer in the dark than the light

21 years later. Like December 7, 1941, this day and date continues to resonate. The mere mention of those two words - Nine Eleven - continues to cause us to stop and remember and collectively mourn. It’s also a day we can celebrate what we value about the present- special or mundane, and we’ve captured a few of those moments as the sun sets this evening.

Clock time vs planetary time — And the winner is...
It’s a bit of a fluke— As the crow flies directly east/west, these places are less than 200 miles apart—about the same distance as Columbus, Ohio and Erie, PA – where the difference in sunset time is less than 10 minutes. (The northern vs southern latitude is not a very significant factor this time of year so close to the Equinox).
However, because the state of Michigan does not occupy the same time zone, each of these places are at the extreme opposite ends of their respective time zones. (Lake Michigan at the end of Eastern Time and Lake Superior at the beginning of Central Time).
So, instead of a smooth transition as the earth steadily turns, the sunset times are chopped, skewed and spit out to match our clocks which suggests we can travel into the past.
I thought this was an interesting little rabbit hole.
Starting here...

August 27, 2022. Sunset 7:35 PM. Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. The Equinox is fast approaching-- Have a look and listen if you have a moment - to what will be a distant memory of summer evenings soon enough. Excerpt from a collaborative sunset celebration with dear friends Steve Horelick and Janet Weir for their neighbors in Hudson, NY. We are playing instruments from Janet’s exquisite collection of bells and gongs which she has gathered for her practice- Hudson Sound Healing

Why is it called a July Buck Moon?
"The full Moon in July is called the Buck Moon because the antlers of male deer (bucks) are in full-growth mode at this time," as The Old Farmer's Almanac says. "Bucks shed and regrow their antlers each year, producing a larger and more impressive set as the years go by."

Visiting dear old friends as I wind my way back to Brooklyn after saying goodbye to Krys and Zo at Krys’ mom’s home in Chicopee, MA. It’s been a blessing-- So good to be moving around and wonderful to spend time with people I haven't seen in such a long time.
