So warm- windows open. Some neighbors stepped outside. We heard someone yelling up the street- "thank you health care workers" and something about the bell ringing. A woman paused with her bike a few feet away while we rang the bell. This bubble held us for a moment - it was almost like holding your breath. Plus it was so warm-- (no winter coat). It’s really nice.

Day 146 Norman's 75th Birthday!

Norman was born on VJ Day in 1945, and we celebrated his 75th birthday this evening in the unseasonably hot weather and another colorful sunset. We were so excited we forgot to take a photo of our ensemble until after we disbanded and went into the backyard with the gophers. Happy Birthday dear Norman!! Thanks to Elisabeth, Richard and Paul for the band! And thank you to all of Norman’s friends and family for your loving wishes and birthday treats!.

Tonight was the first time this felt like a mundane necessity- like getting the mail or putting out the trash. Our nearest neighbors nod or wave as they go about their own business - silently incorporating our routine into theirs. It felt very comfortable. Ordinary.

There's a dove in the tree. She flew there just as we were setting up and then sat very still while we rang the bell. When we finished, she left in a noisy rush, flying up and down the street, her wings squeaking like little rusty hinges.

"Shhh… do you hear that? It’s the sound of World Listening Day approaching on July 18. World Listening Day is put on every year by the World Listening Project, a nonprofit organization that is “devoted to understanding the world and its natural environment, societies and cultures through the practice of listening and field recording.” They explore acoustic ecology, a discipline that studies the relationship between humans and the natural world as mediated through sound. It falls on July 18 to honor the birthday of Raymond Murray Schafer, a Canadian composer and environmentalist who is seen as the founder of acoustic ecology. World Listening Day was established in 2010, and each year the holiday has a specific theme tied to it. Past themes include “H20,” “Sounds Lost & Found,” and “Listen to You!” This year’s theme is “Listening to the Ground,” which asks us to consider the sounds of the literal ground in all its surfaces, from soil to asphalt, whether we’re losing metaphorical ground, and whether we can find new ground by listening for it.
