Hey Brenda, I was thinking of you yesterday… I’m working in Wooster OH this week, an early shift, and I noticed how much darker it is here than in Philly at 6:30 in the morning… Even though the same time zone, much further west, sunrise and sunset or later…
Anyway, I thought of you. Hope all is well.

It's so interesting isn't it- where we are in the time zone? So many factors for when the sun rises and sets-- though if we just move horizontally through the time zone- at least the days are the same length-- It's a lot to keep track of-- BH

I love these kinds of proclamations as much for their sparks to the imagination as for the spontaneous enjoyment that arises from hearing such a thing in the first place.
Who exactly witnessed this event and what were they doing at the time? What kind of person can make such an incredible statement with such certainty and nonchalance?

A comet known as C/2022 E3, marked by its bright green nucleus and long faint ion tail, will be on display in the Earth sky later this month — possibly for the first time ever or at least for thousands of years. Its glow may be visible to the naked eye, though only in dark night skies. Observers with binoculars or telescopes have a greater chance of witnessing the rare speck of light.
Spectators in the Northern Hemisphere can begin to spot the comet's faint glow in the morning sky this month. The comet will likely be visible to those in the Southern Hemisphere starting early February.
After its brief appearance in the Earth skies, it's unclear where it may go.

I have always loved listening to the year roll over. Before cell phones, the pops and bangs and car horns and yelling would start trickling in several minutes before midnight—building to the maximum noise making at midnight. Then, after a minute or so of lots of yelling and some fireworks added to the mix, the loud sounds would thin out and the night would return to whatever state of steady ambience it normally lived in.
Since cell phones, this whole progression happens more “precisely” than in the days when each of us personalized our time keeping devices. Some of us ran a few minutes fast in order to be “on time” for appointments; others synchronized to some standard; still others didn’t keep time accurately at all but wore for watches for other reasons. This looseness of how each of us considered time- affected the sound of “midnight” on New Year’s Eve so that it was a rather drawn out, raggedy affair—
Now it seems that the whole noisy progression is more compressed. The first sounds start later and everything dies down more quickly. It has more of an ensemble feel to it – more predictable, a little less wild.
It’s still an amazing way to travel into the new year – listening in the darkness and celebrating with unknown and unknowable people playing this special once a year piece of music together.

Today is the earliest sunset we will experience this year. Well before the Winter Solstice!
And the sun will set at this same (earliest) time for the next 10 days before opening back up and letting more light onto the world-- (again well before the shortest day of the Solstice)
Though, in spite of the sunset incrementally advancing later into the evening, the Winter Solstice will still end of being the shortest day - as the sunrise will continue to rise later and later each day (well into January).
This all has to do with the rate of change for the sun crossing at each end of the day-- You can track your own approach and departure from the Solstice here. Just fill in your location and track the days- here
Surprised?! I was-- When I first plotted the days and rates of change for the sunrise and sunset, I made this little drawing and it delights me every year.

Continuing our drive back to California after visiting the Buddy Holly Museum in Lubbock, TX , we had perfect timing to reach the Historic Route 66 right at sunset.
This used to be the way to drive from one end of the US to the other. You can literally see for miles and miles in every direction--
