Final Sunset of the Summer- 300 Bells 2 Boats
September 22, 2019. Sunset 6:55 PM. East River, New York. Thank you fellow Ferry riding sunset bell-ringers for these videos-- This batch is from onboard the Ferry from Governors Island to Brooklyn. There are 2 different styles of Ferry that travel back and forth to the Island. I prefer this style, more relaxed and less crowded, it is set up more for passengers than cars. A lovely crossing in any event. Brooklyn Crossing- Composite. Thank you Mia! Rosy River Crossing- Thank you Stephanie! Happy Equinox!

September 22, 2019. Sunset 6:55 PM. East River, New York. Another Ferry from Governors Island-- this one to Manhattan on 9/22/19 at the last sunset of the summer. This Ferry was designed to accommodate cars more than people, so we were mostly crunched up in the front (with the view). Thank you Gabe and Audrey for your videos :)

Cycles of love and death
July 13, 2019. Sunset 8:29 PM. Los Gatos, CA. Until our dear friend Larry passed away, my friends Larry and Catherine Shaw renewed their wedding vow every 7 years. Their friends Bill and Peri (and several other couples) have recently completed their own 7-year cycles (49), (42), (35), (28) (14). They renewed their vows with a ceremony and a big party bash. As part of the celebration they wanted to include a sunset bell ringing like the one we had for Larry’s memorial gathering. Congratulations everyone!!!! (Thank you, Ron for the video)

Lagging and dragging-- leg and the light
Since mid-July, it looks like we've been losing a minute of light from either end of the day. For us at this latitude the days are 33" shorter since the Solstice. It's creeping along-- Much like walking abilities these days... From China and Poland to Pennsylvania and California.-- I am especially grateful to everyone who shared their sun crossing moments with the dailybell these past few weeks as I have been hobbling around on a broken ankle since the end of June. Thank you everyone for sharing your days and evenings and for your kind wishes. Brenda

Noisy Spirits at Sunset
May 10, 2019. Sunset 8:07 PM.
Richmond, CA.
Opening evening sunset for Spirit of invention III at the Bridge Storage and ARTSpace in Richmond, CA. Curated by Peter Whitehead, this amazing collection of instruments and scheduled performances will be up and running through the summer. The place itself offers access to a 2200 square foot workspace & art gallery, shared art studio, woodshop, and sewing lab, with the same perks as more conventional coworking spaces. Bridge facilities include a commercial film stage/screening room which doubles as an event venue. It’s a bit out of the way but well worth a visit.
Thank you David Samas for capturing the moment!

Happy Equilux 2019!
March 17, 2019.
San Francisco, CA.
Unless you live at the Equator, the balance of light and dark does not occur on the Equinox. As you move North, it occurs earlier (and v.v.)
At this latitude the sun rose and set at 7:18 and 7:19 on March 17 neatly dividing and balancing the amount of time we spent in the light and the night. So happy Equilux whenever it occurs for you. (Happy St. Patrick’s Day, too).

Daylight Shifty Time
March 8, 2019. Sunset 6:09 PM.
San Francisco, CA.
Whoa- lots of changes in March--
Daylight Savings Time-- looming (3/10).
Welcome? Longer days? Nope. More light at the end of the day and darker mornings. Offset by a jolt and a jab.
Also-
At this latitude--
3/16 Equilux (equal day and night Sunrise and Sunset 7:30).
Calendar to find your most balanced day of light.
3/20 Equinox 21:58 (9:58 PM) GMT. Time converter for Equinox where you live.
See you on the flip side :)

More Light! Popcorn chicken
February 23, 2019. Sunset 5:56 PM.
San Francisco, CA.
The shortest month is bringing the most light to each day so far. As we plunge towards the Equinox on March 20th, our days (at this latitude) are expanding at a rate of almost 20 minutes per week. Notwithstanding the exaggerated impression of longer days that DST will bring, we will actually be living with almost an hour more sunshine on the Equinox!!

Our Trip around the sun
OK—this is a new insight that I am just realizing that you may also enjoy. It’s exciting to me because it’s something about huge planetary relationships that I can grasp on a human scale. It’s a combination of things we know with things we can imagine. See if this makes sense (or if it's even true).
How do we get from the shortest day of the year to the longest? It depends on where we live in relation to the poles and the equator.
Imagine tossing a ball into the air. When it reaches the top of its arc, you can imagine that it’s momentarily motionless. That’s like the Earth at the edges of the ellipse in its orbit. Those are the Solstices—that sense of suspension when the sunrise and sunset times flatten out for days or weeks at a time depending on your latitude—before opening up to earlier sunrises and later sunsets.
If you live at the Equator, you don’t need to toss the ball very far as your daylight doesn’t fluctuate so much throughout the year. Live at the poles where the sun doesn’t rise or set at the extreme arcs? You’d have to throw the ball so hard it would disappear for a moment.
Most of us are grateful for every little bit of increasing light we get these days. And right now – in the Northern Hemisphere, those of us further North have more darkness everyday than those of us living closer to the Equator- BUT!!! BIG CONSOLATION PRIZE. The Northern days are getting lighter much faster- by minutes per day (Iceland) instead of a few seconds per day (Malaysia).
This seemed like cheerful news and worth sharing.

Light Expanding from Both Ends of the Day!
January 13, 2019. Sunrise 7:25 AM.
San Francisco, CA.
Last of 13 days in a row of the latest sunrise time in the yearly cycle! Since 12/30 the sun has risen at 7:25 AM. Tomorrow begins its creep into earlier and earlier daylight- expanding the light part of the day from both ends. YAY!
We are at the end of that little straight line of purple dots.

Riding the Light Wave
December 14, 2018. Sunset 4:50 PM.
Albany, CA.
Walking along the BART tracks in Albany, CA with my friend Rae as we celebrate the last day of the earliest sunsets of the year. All along this latitude, we are already expanding the light at the end of the day. Sadly, the sun will continue to rise later and later, (even after the Solstice) holding back the full expansion of the day. It will be well into the 1st and 2nd weeks of January before the sunrise begins to shine an earlier light on day. Then off we go!

Ghost Ship Vigil
November 30, 2018. Sunrise 7:04 AM.
Oakland, CA.
I joined Suki O’Kane at sunrise a few days before the 2nd anniversary of the horrible fire that killed 36 people in the Ghost Ship Warehouse on Dec 2, 2016. Photos of many of the victims, ornaments and votive candle holders dangle above the abundance of fresh flowers surrounding the base of the “tree”. Rain the night before had filled each of the small glass candle holders with tiny shots of water, which Suki gently emptied one by one into the waiting bouquets below. She has lovingly tended this memorial and witnessed each sunrise there during the month of November in anticipation of 2-year anniversary.

Stay with Standard time
NO on Proposition 7.
Just weighing in as someone who hates the disruption to the gentle ebb and flow of the continuous cycle of longer and shorter amounts of sunlight. Changing the clocks twice a year also prevents us from collectively experiencing a constant connection to this large planetary cycle - and by extension-- to one another.

So why NO? This proposition is for us to remain on Daylight Savings Time NOT Standard time. This means we will be out of sync with most of the world much of the time (many places do NOT change the clocks to Daylight Savings Time to begin with).
It also means that in another month, the sun will be rising at this latitude at 8:30 in the morning.
I believe a better option would be to remain on Standard Time all year (as does Arizona and Hawaii). All we would have to do would be to opt out of the change to Daylight Savings Time. The law is already set up for that.
I propose voting NO on 7 this time around and putting a Proposition on the next ballot to make Pacific Standard Time the permanent option for us.

Even after so many posts from Joe in the past few days, it only just dawned on me because of the relatively early sunset times and late sunrises, that he is SOUTH OF THE EQUATOR!!! (2917 km = 1812 miles).
Winter.
And only 800 miles closer than Warren's Winter Solstice 6/21 post from Australia (4209 km = 2616 miles)
Happy Wintering down there!!

The second longest day
June 22, 2018. Sunset 8:33 PM
Pescadero, CA.
The second longest day of sunlight, Liz and I ring it down along the coast. A rare and wonderful day. We had just sat through 1½ cycles of “Forest (for a thousand years)", a surround sound installation in the woods at UC Santa by Janet Cardiff and Bures. The sounds were so beautifully recorded and convincingly presented, we were transported.

Summer Solstice- over the top!!
June 21, 2018. Sunset 8:34 PM
Garden of Memory at the Chapel of the Chimes. Oakland, CA
The most exuberant dailybell Solstice sunset ringing at the annual Garden of Memory event- ever!
Now to work on the ending…
Many thanks everyone who contributed to this glorious moment: to the Cardew Choir for their incredible 4-hour performance of Pauline Oliveros’ inspirational Heart Chant. Their long tones have been echoed and magnified by an inspired audience throughout the space, adding a magnificent chorus to the bells. To the enthusiastic members of the public who brought, bells, keys and their voices. Special thanks to the dailybell team (Jenny Holland, Vangie King, Julie Moon, Adria Otte, Alan Phillips, Wendy Reid, Norman Tuck) for distributing cards and bells and information prior to the performance. Wonderful video footage from Miriam Jacobs. And finally, to Sarah Cahill who started the Garden of Memory so many years ago and the New Music Bay Area team for pulling off this entire magnificent event every summer Solstice.

Winter Solstice Sunrise in June--
Hi Brenda!
While we were celebrating the longest day, my friend Warren Burt sent this as a reminder of what is to come...
Winter Solstice sunrise. Taken from V/Line commuter bus in Trentham,
Victoria, Australia at about 7:55 am on Thursday morning 21 June, 2018.
Frost on the meadows - minus 2 C (28.4 F), clear morning - first non-rainy
day in about 2 weeks.
Cheers,
Warren
Thank you dear Warren!

22 years of Sunsets ...
May 13, 2018. Sunset 8:10 PM
San Francisco, CA.
Remembering my mom on Mother's day
-- It's been 22 years worth of sunsets since my mother passed away-- I dug around many boxes of photos to find one with all of us in it. Here's my young mother- with me (spaced out in the back), my sister and brother in 1965. I miss my mother and brother and am so grateful for my dear sister.
