"The big sister from across the street ringing in the Solstice"-- NTI love those purple shoes!
2008 was the inaugural year in an ongoing, aspirational project dedicated to the observation of the sun every time it crosses the horizon and to sharing the awareness of that moment with others while ringing bells. It is based on the conviction that something as inarguable as the movement of the earth can be used as a point of unity and awareness among large groups of people who might otherwise find it impossible to agree. Remembering my brother Bill on his birthday while celebrating outside of the Derek Eller Gallery in Manhattan where Nancy had another show for her work. It is a beautiful show and this was a lovely evening.

So glad to arrive in time for my first sunset in Brooklyn for what feels like summer. Looking down Broadway past the Mona Lisa of Williamsburg to the East River. Sultry.

This is where the full lunar blood moon spectacular eclipse is beginning. Those clouds will continue to roll in and unfortunately, we didn't see any of it. Congratulations to everyone who got a glimpse. We hear it was beautiful!

May 14, 2022. Eclipse notice!
OOoooo. Look out tomorrow evening! Everyone on the East Coast will have a chance to watch this in darkness (weather permitting). For those of us on the West Coast, this will be in progress at sunset-- We should still be able to see a red moon as it falls into shadow. Here's a handy site to look up what time the eclipse will be happening wherever you are

Congratulations to everyone in Krys Bobrowski’s “New Interfaces for Making Music” course at San Mateo College. An amazing display of creativity, grace under pressure and transparency of the process of working with technology that mostly fails in the early days. An evening of work and ongoing installation, Orchestra Obscura was presented by the wonderful Center for New Music. Orchestra Obscura was presented by the wonderful Center for New Music.

(I'm a little distracted by how Mardi's zipper draws such a straight line from her chin through the gap between her legs to the ground). Super fog turned to drizzle just after the sun set. We need so much more!!!

I was afraid we would never hear this bird again—but she’s back. It seems like May is her time to be here—She has a beautiful song and was singing right above our heads!! back and forth with a relative down the street at sunset this evening. If you want to hear what a Canadian member of her family sounds like— here’s a link to listen to the white-throated sparrow. Welcome back birdie!

There's a long story in this photo. These neighbors have been involved with the sunset bellringing since we began more than 15 years ago. Henry was 3 years old. This evening he was telling us how his dog (you can see her little tail there) runs to the door every night when she hears the bell. He could have been talking about his younger self. We would see him plastered to the window across the street, all excited, usually in his pajamas. History repeating itself. Thank you Matt for your reliable presence and company here for all these years.

MINI PROGRESS REPORT---
I have been negligent about sharing the fact that the dailybell has continued to witness and ring bells as usual- for every sunrise and sunset since the onset of the sheltering in place mandate for covid. It’s one thing to keep the flame going but another matter entirely to let people know that it is still happening. Especially these days, it’s nice to know that something good is going on, even if you are not involved directly.

There was a solar eclipse today on 4/30/22, to be followed by a lunar eclipse a couple of weeks from now on 5/15/22 (or 5/16, depending on your time zone).

Partial eclipse of the sun-- that some lucky people in South America and the South Pacific Ocean as well as the penguins in Antarctica will be able to see. Even so, it's a rare enough planetary event that it's worth a moment to take on that perspective. Here's some info
