July 11, 2017. Sunset 9:13 PM.
I hope stuff's going well in California. I'm sending a video recording of sunset at the Ukrainian resort near Ann Arbor where I pretty much grew up in the summers.

Most Joyful Noise-- Garden of Memory Solstice Celebration 2017
June 21, 2017. Sunset 8:34 PM.
Chapel of the Chimes. Oakland, CA.
The most amazing dailybell solstice so far-- this year's sunset bell ringing is the 10th performance at the annual 'Garden of Memory' event at the Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland. The Garden of Memory is curated by Sarah Cahill and populated by 1000's of people who come to share the Solstice with fabulous performances in such a beautiful and unique place.
Blessings and kudos to all who participated with the Cardew Choir in the 4 hour performance of Pauline Oliveros' 'Heart Chant'. The vocal sound and energy was so contagious it spread throughout the crowd. It was magical. Thank you all
Many thanks to Jenny Holland, Miriam Jacobs, Liz Keim, Wendy Reid and Betsey Willson for their help talking with people and distributing invitations and bells. And thank you Jesse Budel for documenting the performance. (Anyone interested in the entire 20 minute experience can see his piece on vimeo)

3000 mile Sunset Repeat
June 19, 2017. Sunset 8:34 PM.
San Francisco, CA.
Norman was in New York, and he and I were checking in on the phone as the sun was setting. It was such a beautiful site, I just wanted to share it with him. So I snapped the photo and sent it along right away. Two sunsets for him.

light late
Flying to Dublin for the Sound Check Exhibition at the Science Gallery at Trinity College where my old Giant Music Box will reside for the next few months.
June 6. Sunset 8:15 PM - somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean, followed by Sunrise on June 7 four hours later just before landfall, where the sun rose at 4:59 AM. Sometimes I can’t figure it out and just sit back and enjoy being lost. No documentation...
Landed
June 7, 2017. Sunset 9:49 PM.
Dublin, Ireland.
So LATE! Farthest north I’ve been so far this year — Anyone north of here? What time does the sun set?

For IONE and Pauline
7 June 17 sunset La Selva Beach, CA. 8:25 PM
We decided that this sunset sounding on Wed. 7 June was the better video to send. It's just Una Nakamura, Suzanne Parkhurst, and me in honor of Ione and Pauline. It was recorded at La Selva Beach, CA (near Aptos).

Longitude vs Latitude?
Driving from New York to Montreal for the Still Listening celebration in honor of Pauline Oliveros, I stopped a few times overnight to visit with friends.
It was interesting to figure out the degree of influence in terms of position (north/south vs east/west) on the sunset times—degrees of longitude vs latitude.
As it turns out, in Upstate NY, our position in the time zone (Longitude) is a more significant factor than how far North we are.
Anyway, I love how late the sun sets at this time of year and look forward to a few more weeks before we head back the other way.

I thought my mother was pretty old when she died
March 30, 2017. Sunrise 6:57 AM.
San Francisco, CA.
This would have been my mother’s 84th birthday. When I consider that this year, I will be the same age that she was when she died, I am shocked at how “not finished yet” I feel. I wonder if that’s usually true, regardless of how long you’ve been alive.
Happy Birthday Mom. I miss you.

Jump into Spring
March 17, 2017. Sunrise and Sunset 7:18.
San Francisco (AM). Oakland (PM)
What I had thought was little bug I picked up in India was actually pneumonia- from which I am recovering (along with a broken rib for my coughing efforts). I’m feeling much better and am especially happy to mark and share this occasion.
For those of us North of the equator, we’ve already had the pleasure of the day of equal light / equal darkness and are now tipped towards the light. Here’s this year’s Equilux offering from the San Francisco Bay Area.

Bell Not Necessary- 2017 Challenge
General Invitation-- Please pass this along to anyone you think might enjoy doing this. 1- Pick a month and curate an event (public or private). Pick one day during your chosen month and plan an event for a group observation and performance to accompany either the sunrise and/or sunset. It does not need to be limited to the ringing of bells. As long as the purpose of the event is to witness and/or celebrate and share as a group the beginning or ending of a new day, anything goes. OR 2- Add a sunrise/ sunset observance to the beginning or end of an event or series of events that you are already involved with. The sun sets around 8:00 PM in the late Spring and early Fall. Logistically, it wouldn’t be difficult to include an invitation to participate in a performance of the dailybell. I would be happy to provide information about the project, a cheap source of bells to have on hand and anything other support you would like. OR 3- Research and report on an existing tradition- Find an existing tradition of sunrise and/or sunset observation in your area (geographical or area of interest) and approach them or report on their activity. Perhaps you could organize a tandem event or even join the group in their (celebration). Many religions mark the times of day through group performance and/or prayer. And as you well know, the Solstices and Equinoxes are favorite times for people to engage in (some kind of observation). AND No matter what you decide to do, please be willing to document and share your event in some way-

Thank you Alyce-- perfect
Last sunset of 2016 in Alpine, TX. 6:04 PM - from Alyce Santoro I was outside capturing the sun setting - with bell, of course! - on the last day of 2016! I can't tell you how many times I THOUGHT of ringing the bell at sunrise or sunset, or didn't get satisfactory documentation!! It was my MISSION not to let 2016 slip by without a single documented ringing...alas, I am without good wi-if at the moment and uploading the evidence will have to wait until tomorrow!

Leaving Fred. Walking down the hallway with the little Santa Light on the floor and the rush hour traffic at the end of the hall outside the door, there was just something about it. The light. The stillness. A sense of suspension.

far far north
October 28, 2016. Sunset 4:29 PM
Bollstabruk, Sweden
Thanks for lovely brighter mornings! Amazing! Gives hope!
Here is a photo of the sun recently, friday the 28th october from the northern swedish region I am living in, from a small village called Bollstabruk.
It is a sunset, already around 4pm (before the wintertime change the former weekend).
Sunsets is happening at same time as sunrises, and I feel so connected with all of you from
all different places, through the sun! Let the sun shine on us, in new brighter mornings and brighter days!
We are listening and watching the sun together!
HUGS AND LIGHT!
