Day 126 grey again

July 25, 2020. Sunset 8:24 PM (again).
San Francisco, CA.

Waiting for that streetlight to come on. It’s erratic and hard to predict but everyone once in a while it lights up the bell.

Four Seattle Sunrises, July 21-24

"If you cannot travel, journey inwards". So said my friend before she went into retreat. I followed soon after. Meditation mornings. Listening to crows and hummingbirds busy at dawn. Sitting. Contemplating. And then, I heard. Slinking quietly, I saw. Staring back at me, with massive eyes. A coyote.

Day 124 Arrival of the Calvary

July 23, 2020. Sunset 8:25.

It’s been a pretty solitary experience out here lately. So it was such pleasant and welcome surprise when Bernie and Mardi glided in at the last minute!

Day 123 our evening routine

July 22, 2020. Sunset 8:26.
San Francisco, CA.

Our evening routine. The BIRD seems to be on her own schedule—We may have passed through her schedule and are now coming out too early to join her for her set. Or we get to be the warm up band for the White Throated Sparrow.

Day 122 ride around the sun

July 21, 2020. Sunset 8:27 (again).

Another cool, dreary evening. The slow seeping of light from the day. Clouds, fog, the ride around the sun.

Day 121 inside outside

July 20, 2020. Sunset 8:27.
San Francisco, CA.

In case you were wondering how cold it is here on a typical summer’s day, we don’t even open the windows in the house. Otherwise, I’d be wearing a coat over my sweater and long underwear. Just like like outdoors.
More business as usual—the sun set a minute earlier than last night. The BIRD was nowhere to be heard. Empty streets this evening.

Day 120 Checking in this evening

July 19, 2020. Sunset 8:28.

Day 119 the BIRD is back!

July 18, 2020. Sunset 8:29 PM (again).
San Francisco, CA.

YES! I am standing under that tree across the street with the BIRD- and the bell is sounding in the distance. A reunion. It’s wonderful to hear that pure little song — Does anyone recognize this tune?? What kind of bird?

"In addition to aspects of collecting, archiving and sound-mapping, the radio aporee platform also invokes experiments at the boundaries of different media, and public space. Within this notion, radio is both a technology in transition and a narrative. It constitutes a field whose qualities are connectivity, contiguity and exchange. World Listening Day

"Shhh… do you hear that? It’s the sound of World Listening Day approaching on July 18. World Listening Day is put on every year by the World Listening Project, a nonprofit organization that is “devoted to understanding the world and its natural environment, societies and cultures through the practice of listening and field recording.” They explore acoustic ecology, a discipline that studies the relationship between humans and the natural world as mediated through sound. It falls on July 18 to honor the birthday of Raymond Murray Schafer, a Canadian composer and environmentalist who is seen as the founder of acoustic ecology. World Listening Day was established in 2010, and each year the holiday has a specific theme tied to it. Past themes include “H20,” “Sounds Lost & Found,” and “Listen to You!” This year’s theme is “Listening to the Ground,” which asks us to consider the sounds of the literal ground in all its surfaces, from soil to asphalt, whether we’re losing metaphorical ground, and whether we can find new ground by listening for it. So quiet down, open up your ears, and get ready to study soundscapes on World Listening Day".

July 17, 2020. Sunset 8:29 PM (again).

The BIRD is back. I heard her as I was rolling the bell outside, but then she was gone. Maybe tomorrow. I thought she was gone for good. We’ll see.

July 14, 2020. Sunset 8:31 PM (again).

Uniformly grey sky. Very still. We met the man walking his sweet Labrador across the street. Spot and his human joined us for the final ringing before heading home. It turns out they live near an olive tree on the next block and can hear the bell from there.

July 8, 2020. Sunset 8:33 PM.
San Francisco, CA.

Since the Solstice, the later sunrises and earlier sunsets have squeezed 7 minutes of light from the day (mostly from the mornings). Still gradual. Another subtle difference I noticed this evening was the low rumble presence of a large airplane—the first in a long time.
